Webinar: A Socially Accountable Rural Medical Program – the Waikato Graduate Entry Medical School

Dr Ross Lawrenson, Director of Medicine and Professor in Population Health at the University of Waikato, presented on the development of the third Waikato Medical School, offering insights into its planning, goals, and expected impact on healthcare in the region.

Rural Research Snapshot highlights struggle to have good health outcomes in rural areas.

For years, our rural healthcare workforce has known intuitively that those in rural areas have poorer health outcomes than those in urban areas, but there has been no clear data to show this. In 2022, academics from Otago and Waikato Universities developed a geographical definition of rurality for health purposes, finally enabling the sector to compare the health outcomes of those living in rural areas with those in or near cities.

Rural Health Careers Programme – Hawkes Bay Rural School Visit Report

It is my pleasure to present what this group did on the Hawkes Bay region trip, visiting six schools over three days – Te Aute College, Havelock North High School, Central Hawkes Bay College, Napier Boys and Napier Girls High School and Iona and Woodford. A presentation was given to each school in the beginning followed by an interactive session for the remainder of the visit. How we split up the groups of tauira depended on the number of students.

Mobile Health | Hauora Taiwhenua Rural New Zealand Health Scholarships

Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network is partnering with Mobile Health Group to offer our rural youth financial support in their pursuit of health studies. The four scholarships (with at least one targeted at Māori/Pasifika student) each valued at $5,000, will be offered to any rural youth entering their first year of full-time undergraduate study in Nursing, Medicine, or allied health related courses at any New Zealand Universities, Polytechnics, or PTEs.
