Reflection of Kaikohe Rural School Visits

It is safe to say that our five-day journey through schools and medical practices across the Northland region has etched profound impressions upon us, as we reflect on our drive to contribute to the enhancement of rural healthcare in our respective fields in the near future. Our week began with a three-hour drive up to Springbank school in Kerikeri, with three sessions including almost 100 students that day. From early on we were left impressed by their health knowledge (which we considered to be advanced at a high-school level) and their willingness to participate and learn.

Government funding set to boost rural doctor workforce

The number of medical students spending a full year working in a rural or regional community is set to swell, thanks to new funding from Te Whatu Ora. More than 35 trainee doctors will be able to spend a year working in rural communities in 2024, due to a funding boost from Te Whatu Ora aimed at tackling the shortage of rural doctors.

Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network welcomes Labour’s announcement to grow the health workforce but is concerned that there is no targeted rural strategy.

Minister Verrall’s announcement yesterday of a significant investment in the health workforce was welcome news for Hauora Taiwhenua and its rural stakeholders.  There is finally acknowledgement in the announcement that the health workforce is ‘the most important component of the health system,’ and that the workforce shortages need long-term solutions.

Relocation Funding Secured for Rural General Practice Recruitment

Hauora Taiwhenua has successfully advocated for a financial relocation incentive for international General Practitioners with Te Whatu Ora. Relocation funding is now available through Te Whatu Ora to support the recruitment of international General Practitioners applying to work in rural primary care practices.

Pre-election Political Panel on Rural Health Commitments

Learn what each of the political parties currently in Parliament will do to improve health outcomes in rural communities if elected to form a Government. Each health representative will be given five minutes to explain their rural health manifesto, and then they will be asked a series of questions, including taking questions from the audience on the night.
