Location

Invercargill is a city at the southern end of New Zealand, and one of the most southerly cities in the world. It is the main centre of Southland, a region with stunning natural landscapes and rich agricultural heritage. Invercargill has a population of about 56,800 and a charming old-world character, with many heritage buildings from the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras. The city also has a vibrant cultural scene, with museums, art galleries, theatres and parks.

One of the highlights of Invercargill is Queens Park, a 200-acre park with gardens, playgrounds, a golf course, an aviary and a museum. The museum is housed in a pyramid-shaped building that showcases exhibits on natural history, Māori culture and local art. Another attraction is Bill Richardson Transport World, a collection of over 300 vintage vehicles, including trucks, cars, motorcycles and tractors.

Invercargill is also close to some of the best attractions in Southland and beyond. Just 18 km south of the city is Bluff, a coastal town famous for its oysters and seafood festival. From Bluff, you can take a ferry or a plane to Stewart Island, a large island off the southern coast of Southland. Stewart Island offers opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, fishing and wildlife viewing.
