What is the orientation course?

Attend our renowned three-day orientation course to get the best introduction to New Zealand’s health system.

Held monthly either in our Wellington Office, or virtually, our orientation course is the first step into the New Zealand health system for international doctors.

This course is endorsed by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP), and is approved for up to 17.5 CME credits for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes.


Who is eligible to attend orientation?

Orientation is open to any international doctors who are interested in a comprehensive introduction to the health system and what it’s like to work as a health professional in New Zealand.

The three-day course is tailored to prepare you for your new life and work in New Zealand.

This orientation course is free for any international doctors who are recruited through NZLocums & NZMedJobs into rural practices. The course is also available for doctors not recruited through NZLocums & NZMedJobs, a fee will apply for this.

The orientation offers presentations on a wide range of the New Zealand health system including:

  • Introduction to general practice in New Zealand
  • Overview of rural nurse’s role in New Zealand
  • Resuscitation workshop
  • PHARMAC (Pharmaceutical Management Agency of NZ)
  • Taxes – your obligations
  • Work and Income
  • Medical Protection Society
  • ACC (New Zealand’s no-fault accident cover for NZ residents and visitors to New Zealand)
  • Medtech32 training (New Zealand’s main patient information system)
  • Māori culture, Treaty of Waitangi, and Māori health outcome and equity
