Great Barrier Island

Role

A medical practice located on Great Barrier Island is seeking a short-term Nurse Practitioner or General Practitioner to join their team. The practice provides primary health care services to a tight-knit community of 1200 people. Although the practice is remote, you will be working in tandem with another permanent full-time GP/NP.

You will be working in the clinic and also providing overnight on-call (including emergency) three days per week and be on-call every second weekend. Call-outs are usually infrequent due to the low population on the island, except during holiday/summer periods when this increases. When needed a 35-minute helicopter ride takes emergency patients to the nearest hospital in Auckland.

Practice

The practice is situated adjacent to the airport and is a well-equipped, modern facility with three consulting rooms and two nurse’s stations. There is a short-stay room, limb x-ray capability, point of care access and minor surgery services available on-site.

This practice also operates a satellite clinic, which is an hour away at the northern end of the island and staffed 24/7 by Rural Nurse Specialists.

Location

Location is everything.

Great Barrier Island is just 30 minutes flight from Auckland. Super city services and the bright lights and shops are “just there,” or you could forget about them entirely. Once you get to this not-so-little slice of heaven, you won’t want to leave. Stunning forest ranges, white beaches, amazing array of both plant and bird life and some rare and endemic species in the mix.

It’s a very popular location with everything you need from grocery stores, pharmacy, library, churches and an amazing recycling centre. Children are catered for with a play centre and choice of three primary schools. High school students can do correspondence or attend any of the numerous boarding options in Auckland.

There is a real sense of community on the island, with regular events that build on that and also generate funds for diverse community needs. Every year the Great Fitzroy Mussel Feast celebrates the local mouth-watering delicacy. The Great Barrier Garden Tour exhibits the island’s beautiful residential gardens and for those who like to keep active, there’s the Golf Club, Sports Club, with tennis and netball courts and regular touch games.

An island lifestyle for everyone, with surfing, snorkelling, bush walks and tramping and horse trekking just some examples of what there is on offer here. Great food, great people, great place. Sound like a great job?!
