Location

Wairarapa means “Glistening Waters” and with New Zealand’s third largest lake and miles of coastline, it’s clear to see why.  Travelling from Wellington through the Rimutaka Ranges, the beauty of the Wairarapa opens up before you, bush-clad ranges to the west across flat plains to a rugged coast on the east.  The region is known for its hot, languid summers and provides a relaxing, refined lifestyle away from the pressures of metropolitan life.

The town of Carterton is the arts hub of the Wairarapa, home to authors, illustrators and painters. Visit ‘Heart of Arts’, an arts, culture and heritage hub showcasing local artists. Located 10 minutes from the town centre is Stonehenge Aotearoa, built by members of The Phoenix Astronomy Society, it is a modern adaptation (opened in 2005) of the Stonehenge ruins on the Salisbury Plain of England.

There are 5 Primary Schools in Carterton, 12 in the Masterton District and 8 in the South Wairarapa District. There is one College in the Carterton District, 7 in the Masterton District and one in the South Wairarapa District. Victoria University in Wellington is only one hour and 20 minutes a car/train ride away.
