Location

Waitara has a population of approximately 6300. This small family orientated town is situated in the Northern part of the Taranaki region. Waitara is close to sea and mountain so if you enjoy, fishing, surfing, mountain climbing, skiing or trekking then this is the region for you.

The commonly accepted meaning of the name Waitara is “mountain stream”, though Maori legend also states that it was originally Whai-tara – “path of the dart”. In 1867 the settlement was named Raleigh, after Sir Walter Raleigh. It reverted to its former name with the establishment of the borough of Waitara in 1904.

There is a High School (years 9-13), an Intermediate school (years 7-8) and two Primary (years 1-6) schools in the region.
