Location

The town of Waipukurau began in the early 1850s on the site of a Maori village. The population is approximately 4000. Rural activity provides the basis for most trade in the town, with sheep and cattle farming being predominant, with two export meat works, and more recently apple orchards, dairy farms and vineyards have been developed.

Waipukurau has good primary schools and a fine secondary school. There are excellent facilities for a wide range of sports and other recreations in the region, with a modern heated indoor swimming pool and attached gymnasium.

Waipukurau has the enviable Hawke’s Bay climate, picturesque views to the Ruahine Ranges and surrounding hills, a relaxed pace of life and warm, friendly people. Excellent beaches for swimming, boating and fishing are within 40 minutes.

Visitors can also tour the Hawke’s Bay area, visiting places such as the art deco cities of Napier (which is only one hour away) and Hastings, Te Mata Peak in Havelock North and the wineries of Hawke’s Bay.
