Oamaru is located on the coast of the South Island, near Dunedin. The town is famous for its superb limestone buildings, coastal wildlife, and coastal walks. Art galleries, museums and great coffee shops can be found in the town. There are also numerous outdoor activities in the area, including fishing in the Waitaki River or the nearby Waitaki Valley Lakes, with jet boating and sailing also available. An attraction in the area is the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony which provides an opportunity to see blue penguins in their natural environment. In the winter season skiing is within easy reach of Oamaru. Children and young adults are well catered for with schooling in and around Oamaru and universities a few hours’ drive away. Oamaru also has a library, public gardens, a hospital and professional and community services, for great rural living.
