Role This practice is seeking a permanent General Practitioner (Family Medicine physician). The role is 6 sessions (3 days) per week with two nights on-call. Weekend on-call is available but not required. We are looking for someone who will work well as part of an experienced and supportive team. Experienced in women’s health care would be an advantage. This position should appeal to a GP seeking a rural lifestyle in an area that has great natural features and hot climate during the summer. If you are a team player, an effective communicator, interested in a variety of work, and have a patient centered approach then this is the right position for you.
Practice The practice offers a full range of family medicine services and provides 24 hour cover for accidents and emergencies. The patient population is around 1500 living throughout the Akaroa Peninsula. Currently a teaching practice for the NZ General Practice Vocational Training Programme and PGY2 trainees. The practice is Cornerstone accredited and runs a MedTech32 practice management system.
Location Akaroa is nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano which is sea-bound on three sides. The Peninsula was originally inhabited by Māori of the Ngai Tahu tribe. In 1840, French settlers arrived at Akaroa, which had just been claimed under the Treaty of Waitangi by the English. To this day, Akaroa remains unique as the site of the only attempted settlement by the French in New Zealand. Many streets have French names, and there are descendants of the original French families still living in Akaroa. You will have a picturesque harbour at your doorstep and families are well catered for with a preschool, play centre and an Area School, which performs well academically. Amenities include a supermarket, pharmacy, petrol station, banks, post shop, several churches, marae, information centre, several community clubs, craft market, library, police station, a variety of accommodation options and a large number of tourist services. There is a 25 metre heated swimming pool on the school grounds available for public use and a boutique cinema. Akaroa’s French history and heritage is celebrated each year at the Akaroa Frenchfest. Akaroa is also the finishing point for Le Race, the annual bike race from Christchurch to Akaroa. Akaroa is an hour and 25 minutes’ drive from Christchurch – New Zealand’s third largest urban centre which has all major amenities and an international airport.
