Mapping the Future of Rural Health Research in Aotearoa

A new research project, funded by the Otago Medical School Foundations Trust and Hauora Taiwhenua, is underway to map rural health research priorities across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Led by Associate Professor Kati Blattner and a team from the Hauora Taiwhenua Research & Education Chapter, this study seeks to identify the top research priorities as seen by Hauora Taiwhenua members. The team includes Dr Lynne Clay (Research Fellow), Drs Rory Miller, Jesse Whitehead, and Jane George, with Professors Sue Crengle and Tim Stokes advising.

Dr George explains the inspiration behind the project: “Despite poorer health outcomes in rural areas — especially for Māori — New Zealand has been slower than other countries to develop coordinated rural health research. We don’t yet have a national rural health research agenda, and establishing one could lead to more effective and equitable health policy.”

The timing of this work aligns with the release of New Zealand’s first national Rural Health Strategy in 2023. The research will help guide future rural health projects and investment by providing a clear set of priorities grounded in the lived realities of rural communities.

The team is calling on Hauora Taiwhenua members to participate in the first survey round, open from June 18 to July 18. Participants will complete up to three 20-minute surveys online, with the goal of collecting a wide range of insights from all chapters and governance levels.

Dr George says, “This project will help shape a national platform for rural health research, influence policy, and ensure resources are allocated more equitably. But it starts with hearing from you.”
