A hospital in Dannevirke is seeking a rural hospital doctor to fill a permanent position and advance the hospital’s capabilities by providing an expanded array of services, including support in the ward, trauma room, radiology, and sonography. The individual in this role will be responsible for spearheading this progress.

This Hospital is a community and Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora (the government health agency) owned facility with an integrated primary care service in the mid-central area of the North Island of New Zealand. It is DRHM Level 2 and GCH Category R2.

Dannevirke Hospital is the base for community health services, with an integrated GP service. It has eight inpatient beds and three maternity beds. There is medical cover onsite during work hours, and on call afterhours. X-ray and ultrasound is available Monday to Friday between 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Dannevirke, with a population of around 6200, is a family-focused town with a strong sense of community. Situated in the Tararua District, it boasts two forest parks, three mountain ranges, rugged coastline, bush-covered valleys, and nearly 300 kilometres of river network. The nearest base hospital is in Palmerston North, approximately 58 kilometres, or one hour’s drive, west of Dannevirke. The nearest tertiary hospital is in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, approximately 200 kilometres, or two and a half hours drive southwest of Dannevirke. Wellington offers a small international airport, various tourist attractions and activities (including Te Papa, the National Museum), a lively bar and restaurant scene, and several tertiary education providers. Dannevirke serves as an important service centre for the Tararua region, with recreational activities including hiking, camping, and golfing.
