Paeroa and Thames

Role

Practices across the Paeroa and Thames regions are looking for long-term or permanent support from a general practitioner (GP) working 6 to 8 sessions per week.

We require someone who is highly engaged and passionate about working with our whānau (families) in a kaupapa Māori environment. The successful candidate will need to be committed to achieving health equity and driving quality improvement to ensure better health outcomes for our patients in Hauraki rohe.

The cost of Medical Council registration, College fees and medical indemnity insurance for permanent staff will be covered by the practice.

Practice

Te Korowai has 5 Whānau Health Centres located in Thames (at Thames Hospital), Whitianga, Coromandel, Paeroa and Te Aroha.

We can offer the successful candidate workplace variety, a supportive team and management structure as well as a competitive salary. We are iwi-owned with a strong focus on providing high-quality affordable health care for our community.

Responsible to the Clinical Director and an integral part of the Ohu Hauora team, this position is also responsible for ensuring work carried out supports best practice, meets sector standards and whānau needs, respecting the rights and confidentiality of whānau at all times; ensuring services are delivered professionally and of the highest quality to meet funder and contract requirements.

This fun, exciting whānau health service has access to multiple in-house resources/wrap-around services, including counselling, chronic care, mental health and whānau ora (housing and social work).

Location

Paeroa is a growing North Island town offering great lifestyle and work–life balance. It’s close to major cities and near beaches, mountains, rivers, and the Coromandel. Outdoor lovers can enjoy the Karangahake Gorge, the Hauraki Rail Trail, and year-round activities. Each February, the popular Pipe Band Tattoo brings the community to life.

If you’re after a fulfilling GP role in a welcoming, fast‑growing community with stunning surroundings, Paeroa is a great choice.

Thames is a 1.5 hour drive from Auckland, Thames is the rural centre of The Coromandel. The town was formed in 1870 from two smaller settlements – Shortland and Grahamstown – founded to support gold mining in the early 1860s.

The northern end of Thames, known still as Grahamstown, offers cafés and boutique shops in a charming colonial setting. Be sure to visit the museum, which covers early Maori times, the arrival of the first pioneers and the development of mining, logging, railways and shipping. You can also visit the historic School of Mines, which is open from Wednesday to Sunday year-round.

Behind the town, the ancient volcanic Coromandel Ranges rise steeply. The magnificent Kauaeranga Valley hiking and camping area is just to the south, and the road to the north follows the coast past scores of sandy beaches and fishing hot spots.
