Innovation in Rural General Practice Award

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR THE INAUGURAL INNOVATION IN RURAL GENERAL PRACTICE AWARD 2026

The Innovation in Rural General Practice Award recognises and celebrates outstanding innovation in rural general practice across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Established under Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network (HTRHN), the award highlights a rural practice that is delivering creative, community-centred solutions to complex rural health challenges. It also provides an opportunity to share best practice nationally and strengthen the visibility and value of rural generalism within New Zealand’s health system.

The award aims to:

  • Celebrate and showcase community-centred design and delivery of health services in rural communities
  • Recognise rural general practices that exemplify the principles of rural generalism through innovative and flexible approaches
  • Promote innovation as a cornerstone of sustainable, high-quality rural healthcare

Eligibility

The award is open to:

  • Organisation Members of the Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network
  • Rural general practices located in Aotearoa New Zealand, including all islands
  • Practices that can demonstrate the implementation of innovative solutions that improve patient care, access, or health outcomes in rural settings

 

Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Innovation – Originality and creativity in addressing rural healthcare challenges
  • Impact – Measurable benefits for patients, communities, and/or practice sustainability
  • Scalability – Potential for replication or adaptation in other rural contexts
  • Alignment – Consistency with rural generalism principles and community-centred care

 

Nomination and Selection Process

Nominees will be asked to:

  • Provide evidence of their Hauora Taiwhenua membership
  • Submit either:
    • A written application of up to 1,500 words describing their innovation, or
    • A video application of no more than six minutes

Nominations will be reviewed by the Hauora Taiwhenua Board.

The Innovation in Rural General Practice Award will be launched at the 21st WONCA World Rural Health Conference incorporating the National Rural Health Conference in 2026.

The award will be presented annually at the conference, recognising rural general practices that are shaping the future of rural healthcare in Aotearoa.
